Who are The Americans?

Robert Frank, one of the most influential photographers of all time died this week. Perhaps his most important book was called The Americans, published in the U.S. in 1958. This book was famous for  offered a revealing portrait of American society. Many observers noted that Mr. Frank was able to see American society more clearly, more penetratingly because he was an immigrant. To what extent do you agree with this statement? (He was born in Switzerland and moved to the U.S in 1947). According to the director of the Museum of Modern Art in NYC, "The pictures took us by ambush then ... He established a new iconography for contemporary America, comprised of bits of bus depots, lunch counters, strip developments, empty spaces, cars, and unknowable faces."
